Assassination of Mr Lincoln

New York April 15:
President Lincoln was shot by an assassin last night and died this morning . . . from a correspondent in London: The following official telegram has been furnished by the United States legation in London, per the Nova Scotia [ a ship]:

Sir - It has become my distressing duty to inform you that last night His Excellency Abraham Lincoln, President of the United States, was assassinated about the hour of half past 10 o'clock in his private box at Ford's theatre in the city [ Washington].

From a New York correspondent: This evening President Lincoln, with Mrs Lincoln, Mrs Harris and Major Rathbyrn, was shot by an assassin who suddenly entered the box, and approached behind the President. A pistol ball entered the back of the President's head, penetrating nearly through. The wound is mortal.

The assassin then leaped on the stage, brandishing a large cutlass, and escaped through the rear of the theatre . . . It is not practicable that the President will live throughout the night. General Grant and his wife had been advertised to be at the theatre that evening, but they had started for Burlington.
