This is a self drive tour of County Wicklow. The start of the tour is easily accessible from two ports and from Dublin City. Take the N81 from Tallaght in Dublin to Blessington, which is situated 24kms from Dublin. The town is the gateway to the Poulaphouca Lakes which were created in the 1940s. Travel on to Russbourough House just outside the town. This is a Palladian style house which houses the world famous Beit collection of art, with Dutch, Flemish and Spanish masterpieces. The house also contains fine furniture, tapestries, carpets and porcelain as well as paintings on loan from the National Gallery of Ireland. From here travel on to Hollywood for lunch. Continue on across the Wicklow Gap, with its varied scenery of waterfalls, mountains and heather, mostly uninhabited. Just before you come into Glendalough you can see the disused lead mines on the right. Stop in Glendalough, the monastic city dating back to the 6th Century. Here you can go on a tour of the monastic ruins, including the impressive round tower. Or go to the visitor centre to learn more about the history of this beautiful valley. Don’t miss the breathtaking scenery at the lakes ( clearly signposted )
