Edmund came from the small town of Callan in County Kilkenny where he was born on 1st June, 1762 and where his family was involved in extensive farming. His parents saw to it that Edmund was well educated.
“The thatched house ‘Westcourt’ is which Edmund was born on 1st June 1762 is almost 300 years old. The six-roomed house consists of a kitchen, parlour, breakfast room and three bedrooms. Of particular interest is the bedroom in which Edmund Rice was born. Also on the site is the Edmund Rice Memorial Chapel and a visitors centre.
Notice:
Due to renovations the Edmund Rice Cottage at Westcourt will be closed from 21st December 2012 to 26th April 2013. The memorial chapel and visitor centre will remain open during the renovations.
