Allihies is a charming village on the very south west tip of Ireland, on the end of the Beara peninsula in County Cork. Three pubs, a grocery store and a post office makes up the village. There are numerous beautiful places to visit. Natural stone arches, mountain walks and a cable car visit to Dursey island are among the many things that a visitor can do.
In the summer season it is easy to laze about on the beach or try your luck at fishing off the rocks. One of the attractions to the village is the old copper mine buildings. Cornish copper mines were set up in Allihies a few hundred years ago and the remains of the buildings can be seen. Exactly the same as the old mine buildings one can see in Cornwall, England. A copper mine museum is now open in the village. The museum will be of interest to many, young and old to show how the mines worked and the conditions for miners a few hundred years ago.
There are many things to do in Allihies, hill walking, beach walking and swimming, visiting natural arches, dolmens, ring forts, castles and stone circles. Or for the more active you can go horse riding, fishing, scuba diving, cycling, mountain biking, golf, bird watching, dolphin and whale watching. Dursey Island is well worth a visit and accessed by it's cable car.
It is also possible with a suitable mode of transport to visit Kenmare, Bantry, Glengarrif and Castletownbere from Allihies, taking in the magnificent Healy Pass. The ring of Beara is also a beautiful drive with lots of art galleries and general places of interest worth a stop every few miles.
