Following the successful Irish Open at Carton House last June, The European Tour and Golf Ireland are looking forward to the 2014 edition and the opportunity to recreate the popularity of the event in front of equally huge crowds when the Irish Open returns to Cork, at the Deerpark Course at Fota Island Resort, Co Cork. From June 19-22, some of the world’s top players will walk in the footsteps of Denmark’s Søren Hansen, who won the title when The Irish Open was last played at Fota Island Resort in 2002. Book tickets for this fantastic event here

Ireland’s latest golfing champions – Rory McIlroy, Darren Clarke, Graeme McDowell and our Golf Ireland Official Ambassador, Pádraig Harrington – will be playing at this year’s Irish Open. They’ll be joined by a host of national and international top golfing stars, including 2014 Ryder Cup Captain, Paul McGinley and Shane Lowry, as they battle to secure the tournament’s first home win since Lowry’s amazing victory as an amateur, at County Louth Golf Club in 2009.

It’s a welcome return to one of the finest golf courses, not just in Ireland but the world. At full stretch – over 7,000 yards – Jeff Howes design is championship stuff, set against truly breath-taking scenery, and offers some of the most challenging golf imaginable. For serious golfers with a qualified handicap, it’s a chance to test their skills in a tournament where dreams have come true, and legends made. But you don’t need to take part to be there. Join thousands of golf fanatics for an unforgettable experience on and off the course. You can anticipate nerve-racking putts, heart-breaking shots into the water and sublime tee shots. And you can expect a long list of global golf stars to be there. We hope you will be too.

It would appear that golf was first played at Fota Island as far back as the 1800's. In 1993, a new course was developed at Fota Island, designed by Irish Ryder Cup star Christy O'Connor Jr. and twice English Amateur Champion Peter McEvoy. While essentially a resort course, it hosted a number of tournaments, including the Irish Club Professional Championship, the Irish PGA Championship and no fewer than three Irish Amateur Opens.

At the beginning of 1998 Fota Island Golf Club was under the direction of Jeff Howes Golf Designs upgraded to European Tour Standards. Following an 18 month multi-million Euro programme  that saw the rebuilding of all 18 greens, the redevelopment of all tees and the redesign of several of the holes, the course reopened in September 1999.  This paid dividends with the Deerpark Course playing host to the Irish Open in 2001 & 2002, won by Colin Montgomerie and Soren Hansen, respectively. Fota Island Resort will once again play host to Ireland's Open Championship in 2014 as the Irish Open returns to Cork for the first time in 12 years between the 19th & 22nd June.

The Irish Open will return to Northern Ireland after this year's event, taking place at Royal County Down in 2015 and at Lough Erne Resort in 2017.
