Director Annabelle Comyn is bringing John Osborne’s seething play, Look Back In Anger, to the Gate stage, and it promises to be a theatrical highlight. With a brilliant creative team behind it, including costume designer Sarah Bacon and Chahine Yavroyan on lighting, it is going to be a feast for the senses.

Written in 1956, this realist play remains particularly relevant, especially at a time when social mobility and opportunity has faltered across the world. In Look Back In Anger, John focuses on Jimmy Porter, a smart and educated young man of blue collar origins and his upper middle-class wife.

With snobby friends and down-to-earth lodgers flitting in and out of scenes, the play explores chips on shoulders and class warfare with a very realistic eye.

One of the first grittily realistic British plays, you’ll gain a real appreciation for how genre-defining Look Back In Anger was as you watch the action unfold at the Gate. Its influence can still be seen in everything from Ken Loach films to Coronation Street. What a legacy.
