Kilkenny City’s 13th century Kytelers Inn has come up with a novel solution for attracting big crowds and creating a new tourist experience that is wowing visitors and packing their historic venue to the rafters.
Every Monday and Tuesday evening at 6.30pm, the ’Irish Beats – Bodhran Session’ is unleashed and up to 100 tourists a night have been turning up to enjoy the music and getting to explore the finer points of Ireland’s native drum, its origin, structure and contribution to Irish music.
Much more importantly, they get to play under the expert tutelage of our Bodhrán instructor Damien. No matter their musical ability (or lack of it) tourists aged from 4 to 94 are encouraged to have a go and as they listen, watch and then copy, their confidence grows and the smiles start to appear.
