Castlecomer Discovery Park located in County Kilkenny is centred around two rainbow trout fishing lakes. These man-made lakes were originally constructed by the Prior Wandesforde family as a centrepiece for the Demesne grounds.
Both of these lakes are man-made and having been drained in the past, the lakes are now fully re-instated with angling stands to allow full access to the water and a series of cascades link the lakes and channel the water back into the River Deen. The lower lake is reserved for fly fishing and the upper lake for bait fishing and both are regularly stocked with rainbow trout varying from 1 to 15lbs (0.5 to 7 kilograms) in weight. Angling here is open year round.
There is an hourly charge for four hours angling. In general Castlecomer strongly support a catch and release policy. On a four hour permit an angler can keep two fish up to 3lbs weight. All adult fish are on a catch and release basis only. Once the bag limit has been taken the angler can continue to fish on a catch and release basis for the remainder of the time allocated.
There is an angling shop on site which sells bait and flies and rod hire is also available. Lessons are available by prior arrangement. Any anglers under 16 years old must be accompanied by an adult.
