Sherkin Island, Cork, Republic of Ireland
Sherkin Island is located off the mainland of County Cork and is accessible by a ferry that leaves from Baltimore. In the mid-15th century, a friary was founded on the island, and it was both a place of worship and centre of learning.
The historic Sherkin Island can be reached by a 15-minute ferry ride from Baltimore, County Cork. The island is home to the ruins of a Franciscan friary established in the mid-1400s as a centre of both religion and learning.
Much of Sherkin's fauna is attributed to the monks, as they introduced many medicinal herbs and plants for food.
The monastery continued to operated until 1796, when its last friar died.
