Award winning Community Art Centre featuring year round programming of local, national and ...
Historically home to St. Mary's convent and St. Joseph's school in the 19th and early 20th century, the award-winning Playhouse Theatre is based in Artillery Street and was established in 1992 with a grant of just £300. Since then it has grown to become one of Ireland’s leading award-winning multi-disciplinary Community Art Resource Centres based on a neutral site within the city centre. It is a self-help, grass roots, bottom-up community development project which is people centred and has charitable status.
Since re-opening, the Playhouse has been nominated for, and won some, prestigious awards for the design of the building. The Playhouse now houses an awarding winning 189 seater theatre, Contemporary Art Gallery, Dance Studio, Art Resource Centre and Northern Ireland’s largest Education and Outreach Department, as well as being home to several cultural/art based tenants. It offers a year round programme of events from theatre, to comedy, from dance to music.
