The boathouse Visitor's Centre contains an Ulster History Circle Blue Plaque dedicated to Robert The Bruce. Robert Bruce was born on 11 July 1274 and became Guardian of Scotland when William Wallace resigned. he shared the task with John Comyn, whome he murdered in Dumfries at a meeting of truce. He then fled to Rathlin Island where he lived in a cave and devised a successful strategy to defeat the English, based on watching a spider. He was crowned King of Scotland at Scone in 1306.
***Please note that the separate RSPB Seabird Centre on Rathlin Island will not be open to the public during the 2014 season. It will re-open for business in April 2015. This is to facilitate an upgrade to visitor facilities at the centre.
