The recently completed Geological Garden at Crawfordsburn Country Park is a unique educational facility in Northern Ireland. Using a series of large rock specimens and related materials set out along a 'time trail', the garden tells the story of the development of what is now Northern Ireland.

The geology of our bit of Planet Earth shows how we were once separate from the south of Ireland, England and Wales by a now lost ocean. The movement of the continents slowly joined these islands, initially with North America with the final separation only happening very recently geologically speaking. This movement has also taken us through a range of climatic and environmental zones, our rocks revealing a past that includes tropical oceans, dry deserts, erupting volcanoes and freezing ice sheets. The Geological Garden allows us to time travel through this fascinating history.
