Cape Clear Island, West Cork,
Ms Ann O Reagan
Cape Clear Hostel is on Cape Clear Island, an exceptionally beautiful island off the coast of West Cork. The hostel is situated in the stunning South Harbour of Cape Clear and within a few steps of the pebble beach and the sweeping Atlantic Ocean.
Cape Clear Youth Hostel is the most southerly hostel in Ireland. It is part of the Irish Youth Hostel Association which emphasises safety and security in budget accommodation for youth travellers and groups. Manager Ann will always make every effort to ensure your visit to her home island is one to remember and ensure you will want to come back and visit again.
Cape Clear Youth Hostel dates from the 1600s and was a coastguard station before being restored in the 20th century. The island itself is 8 miles from the mainland, making it the most southerly inhabited island off Ireland. It can be reached by ferry and offers visitors a peaceful and quiet experience with plenty of activities.
It is a favourite with nature lovers because it is on the migratory path of whales, dolphins and marine birds due to its warm waters. It is also ideal for fishing, snorkelling and kayaking. For culture lovers it has a world famous story telling festival, plenty of archaeological sites and a good number of local pubs, shops and cafes that cater to Irish speaking locals and visitors.
Cape Clear Youth Hostel itself can accommodate visitors in a variety of rooms, all of which have stunning views of the sea. There is also a large self catering kitchen, laundry facilities, central heating, a lounge with open fire and games, dining room and Internet access.
Cape Clear hostel is open for groups of 10 or more all year round and from April to October for all others. Guests return year after year to Cape Clear hostel due to its stunning location, tranquil atmosphere and wealth of activities.
