There is always something new to see at the Museum and from April 2012 until February 2013 there will be a new temporary exhibition “A Mourne Miscellany: historic documents and artefacts from the Mournes and Kilkeel” on display. This exhibition explores life in the Mountains of Mourne and town of Kilkeel, from the medieval period until the present day. Rural life, the fishing industry and commercial ventures are all examined. On display is historic clothing from RJ Sloane’s drapery store in Kilkeel, and items from the local fishing industry. Of particular interest are maps from the estate of the Earls of Kilmorey, a teapot from The Square Cafe in Kilkeel and a seaman's ration book reflecting the impact of World War II on the area. Bagenal’s Castle is a sixteenth century fortified house and adjoining nineteenth century warehouse. It houses Newry Tourist Information Centre and Newry & Mourne Museum, opened in 1986. During restoration work on the Castle many original features were uncovered including fireplaces, windows, doorways, gun loops and a bread oven. These have been interpreted for the visitor and drawings were commissioned to illustrate how the various living quarters of the castle would have functioned in the sixteenth century.
