THe Hole in the Wall is the inner house of the Archer Mansion built 1582. It became a tavern after 1690 and was renowned in the late 1700s. The Earl of Ormonde and the future Duke of Wellington were habitueés.
THe Hole in the Wall is the inner house of the Archer Mansion built 1582. It became a tavern after 1690 and was renowned in the late 1700s. The Earl of Ormonde and the future Duke of Wellington were habitueés. It tells the history of Kilkenny & Ireland and is in the centre of Kilkenny.
It shows original and conserved 1582 features such as fireplaces, windows, beams, lintels, flooring, limeplaster walls etc and Elizabethan era furniture and artefacts relating to its historical link to France (- as an Irish Catholic College in 1686), America, Australia etc and the 1916 history of Ireland. It functions as a café during the day and as a tavern that serves organic craft German beers, local Highbank organic proper cider and wines etc.
It is a music venue for international acts, has developed its own shows as part of the 'Showing History' series (Being Edith Piaf; In the Shadows of the Mine; Unchain My Heart etc). There are monthly festivals and themes such as Seacht Seachtain na Gaelige, Deutsche Woche, Theatre and Literature Months, French Fortnight, Japanese Week, Barbados Week, Acadian Festival, Franz LIszt Month, Days of America, Days of the Russians and a Sinterfest.
It is fully serviced, available for school and tour visits, open to musical performers of all genres with its state of the art sound system.
It can host medieval-style banquests in the Archer Room. It is behind the Enable Ireland / O'Connors Jewellers / Pauls shops and access into it is achieved through an alleyway from High St. Access to it can be achieved from William St - though there is no access into it from there of late.
