A perfect day in Dublin

Dublin locals share their perfect day in their home city

We asked three in-the-know characters living in Dublin, what would be a perfect day in the city.

The journalist

Sports journalist Peter Carroll shares his favourite beach, dinner and match in the city.

“The early bird catches the worm as far as Dublin goes. You can’t beat an early morning stroll through the beautiful Phoenix Park. I love the peace and quiet, as well as the meandering deer.

“Only two minutes away is the hustle and bustle of the city, and my favourite dish and classic Dublin comfort food: coddle. Steaming hot Dublin coddle is a house specialty in the Stag’s Head pub. After a hearty bowl, it’s across the road and into the arts hub of the city, Temple Bar. I could spend hours here listening to the street musicians.

“Next I hop on the train north, to take in the breathtaking views and lulling sounds of Loughshinny near Skerries. The beach is famous locally for its smugglers’ cave used in the 18th century. If the weather is nice, I’ll head back to Dollymount Strand to witness the water sports of the brave souls, and chat with fellow onlookers.

“On an ideal Sunday, I’d head to Drumcondra and immerse myself in the pride and passion of Gaelic games at the Mecca of our national sports, Croke Park. After the match I’ll tackle one of the surrounding pubs, such as McGrath’s for the Guinness, or Quinn’s for a singsong. Live traditional music never fails to rattle my bones.

“Dublin doesn’t have to try very hard to impress, just being there is enough.”
