County Donegal
Points of Interest
Glenveagh National Park and Castle
Set on Lough Veagh, this is Ireland's largest National Park, It's a magnificent 17,000 hectare estate of lakes, gardens, glens and mountains and is the county’s top tourist attraction. The park is home to red deer and the country's only wild Golden Eagles - the Park re-introduced them to Ireland in 2007 after an absence of more than 100 years. The pyramidical Mount Errigal, Donegal's highest mountain, is part of the park.
Slieve League sea cliffs
The sea cliffs of Slieve League are heaven on a sunny day. Although 600m high – they are higher than the Cliffs of Moher – there is a gentle walk to the summit involved and an alternative lower walk on the promontory will give you classic views across Sligo and Mayo on a clear day.
Malin Head
Marvel at other dramatic sights along Donegal’s coastline including Hell's Hole in the cliff face of Malin Head, Ireland’s most northerly headland and a familiar landmark on shipping forecasts.
Ramelton
This Heritage Town, along the banks of the river Lennon is a little treasure with Georgian buildings and some great pubs.
Ardara
Located at the neck of three peninsulas near Glenties, this village is known for its arts and crafts and Donegal Tweed. In Glenties take in the breath-taking view of the Blue Stack mountains.
Gweedore
The heart of the Gaeltacht area, Gweedore is a beautiful retreat with lovely pubs and restaurants, plenty of holiday accommodation. It lies beneath Mount Errigal, which rises up from the heathery plains like a volcano.
The Islands
The islands of Tory, Arranmore, Gola, Inish Bofin and Inish Free are all accessible and are a great place for a short-stay.
Ring Fort
The ancient Grianan of Aileach is one of the country’s most impressive ring forts, dating back to early Christian times – almost 4,000 years old – and offers spectacular views over Lough Foyle and Lough Swilly.
Donegal Castle
If you want to get to know the history of the county and the O’Donnell chieftains check out this 15th century fortress on the river Eske in Donegal Town.
Quiet country villages to visit
Letterkenny
A booming town with a university, huge out-of-town shopping centre and plenty of accommodation. Check out the Donegal County Museum for a history of the Oatfield sweet factory which has been making confectionary locally including the chocolates, Emeralds, for the last 180 years.
