Snowdrop Week in Altamont Gardens is a delightful opportunity for the green-fingered and general gardening enthusiast to view this unique collection. The collection was started by Mrs. Corona North, former owner of the gardens, approximately 30 years ago and has over 100 named varieties in the collection. A few of the snowdrops originating in Altamont are as follows:
Galanthus elwesii "Drummonds Giant", was found and named by Mrs. North in the 1990s, a very strong plant with large flowers. The snowdrop was bought from Drummond Seed Company in Carlow.
Galanthus plicatus "Green Lantern", the segments are distinctively marked with an inverted v below a smudge of green and its outer petals are also tipped with green.
Galanthus elwesii "Skyward", named by Paul Cutler, head gardener at Altamont, this is very tall and upright (up to 30cms), holding its flowers well above its foliage.
The collection is the second largest collection in Ireland, and snowdrops can be purchased from Robert Miller, Altamont Plant Sales, located on the grounds of Altamont Gardens.
