Take a closer look Matthew, its actually Alan FITZPATRICK. Damn, that's probably why I didn't get elected.

My comment wasn't, as you mistakenly implied, an attack on democracy. I was refering to the smug, comfortable middle-ground conservative Irish voter who is badly informed, apathetic and largely concerned only with tax cuts as their major polical imperative while also somehow expecting public services to improve.

When compared to the salary of Steve Staunton, Bertie Ahern's salary is cheap.

I love Alan Fitzgerald's comment 'I blame the idiots'. How would be propose we determine our parliment who in turn determine out Taoiseach? I remain committed to a democracy. We get the choose the best, usually from an uninspiring list, but we choose as best we can and we get what we deserve. I don't see Alan Fitzgerald listed as a TD so guess he was either unlucky not to get elected or choose not to stand.

This, in a week when Ms O'Neill received a Euro 58k pay rise, makes a mockery of the fact that most of us have to have performance targets - and actually achieve them - to get a miserable 1 or 2% bonus. I'm so ashamed of this, and so fed up of people getting away with fiddling this country (civil servants, solicitors, et al) that it makes me want to live elsewhere.

I would blame the idiots that voted him back in before I would blame Bertie.

Like the majority of Irish politicians he is just trying what he knows he'll get away with, and probably being admired by the many morally vacant in Ireland that have a soft spot for 'cute hoors'.
