Who’s worst?

Filed under: Airlines — Conor @ 12:44 pm

I was interested to read that Ryanair accounted for 60 per cent of the complaints made by passengers to the Irish aviation regulator last year despite the fact that the airline is responsible fror just 35 per cent of the flights from Irish airports. Complaints are concentrated around flight cancellations and delays, according to the Commission for Aviation Regulation. Aer Lingus, meanwhile, attract more complaints from people denied boarding because of overbooking.

We may complain about our airlines, but Swissair is something else. I went to book a one way fare to Zurich on Swissair, as a return was not needed. It was an eye-watering €661, or nearly three times a return flight. It is possible to fly to Australia for less than that. On enquiry, the company helpfully pointed out that I could book the return leg (€120) and not use it. In other words, a surcharge of €120 for a one way flight. I can only assume that the Swiss government has a policy of actively discouraging tourists. Irish airlines, all is forgiven.
