Waste not

Filed under: Phones — Conor @ 11:43 am

I have always suspected that the all those bundled and supposedly free calls and text messages that mobile companies offer phone users were not as worthwhile as they might have had us believe and research published today appears to bear that out. Apparently phone owners leave on average 20 hours of their “inclusive” calls each year unused which amounts to €73.30 every year. The Uswitch.com survey also found that an average of 73 “inclusive” texts go unsent every month.

    Hi,

I haven’t read the report but it’s a bit inaccurate to suggest that people are “losing money” by opting for plans with slightly more inclusive calls than they need - in practice their net telephone costs may still be lower than if they opted for a lower priced tariff (the bigger plans seem to contain a disproportionate number of minutes in a lot of cases). As a small business, we keep a relatively close eye mobile phone costs and I’m not convinced “wasted inclusive minutes” is the big issue.

After saying that, it makes sense to regularly review your phone usage and determine if you’re on the best plan. I find http://callcosts.ie pretty good for this (along with some recent bills).

You can check with your mobile provider on a regular basis to confirm that you’re on the most suitable price plan for your usage.
