Ding ding: John Waters v a Blogger

Filed under: Blogs, Radio — Shane @ 5:23 pm

Frankly, I’m not sure how seriously we should be taking John Waters’ comments on blogs - he was quite clearly being mischevious the first time around - but he has repeated them a couple of times on radio and in print since. Also, despite the fact that it’s been a talking point online over the past week, I’m always reluctant to open up this blog to any wider discussion on a colleague.

Well, it’s getting harder to avoid because tomorrow morning at 8.30am, on Newstalk’s Breakfast Show, he’ll face off against Fergal Crehan from Tuppenceworth, so hopefully it’ll give the debate a bit more depth.

Although, given how hard it is to avoid using the language of confrontation when even discussing the discussion then it may be too pugilistic for anybody’s good.

Which of the Rocky’s is this contest to be modeled on?

Rocky IV. I will speak in a russian accent throughout. That should freak him out.

    (btw, it’s Crehan, not Grehan:)

Fergal - Are you sure about that? :)

I think Sarah Carey has it; this is just an attempt by John to find a responsive enemy to generate column inches…

I can see this going down to a points decision with plenty of money on offer for the rematch.

He sounded like a bit of an eejit this morning, it has to be said.

Is John the new Kevin Myers? Put there just to provoke reader outrage? Madame Editor?

Twenty - That could have been you throwing the punches this morning.

73man - I’m not the editor yet, but thanks for the compliment.

I thought Fergal did a fine job.

Twenty - I agree, although the set up wasn’t ideal. There’s a good debate to be had on Irish blogging - between a selection of people who know the subject well - but this wasn’t it.

It looked for a glorious few seconds as if Waters was going to be tempted into sticking the boot into yourself, Jim and Conor. Now that would have been magic.

    I agree with that too.

I think Fergal acquitted himself quite well against a veteran performer in these types of slugging matches. He should consider a career in some kind of advocacy role.

I agree the setup wasn’t ideal. It was a good debate, but not a great debate and a different format with more participants would make for a more interesting discourse. There were some very good moments though throughout.

I loved that John stood up for the value of “common knowledge” or as many people know term it urban legend and prejudice.
