  • BBC censors Fairytale of New York

    December 18, 2007 @ 12:40 pm | by Shane

Latest news from the world of dumb censorship: BBC Radio 1 is going to edit out the word “faggot” every time it plays Fairytale of New York. It’s also censoring “old slut on junk”. But, good news for filth fans, “scumbag” stays.

According to the BBC’s own report:

The BBC said: “We are playing an edited version because some members of the audience might find it offensive.”

A Radio 1 spokeswoman said the station’s management had met on Tuesday morning to discuss the issue.

She said they “had made their decision” and would not be going back on it.

But the ban does not apply across the BBC. Radio 2 said it would be playing the full version of the track.

For starters, Kirsty McColl is NOT calling Shane McGowan “gay”, so this is utter nonsense.

Secondly, anyone offended by it deserves to be offended, so the BBC should turn up the volume specifically for those words.

Thirdly, Ronan Keating started all this when his attempt to destroy the song forever included chaning the line to “you’re cheap and your haggard”. Now that was offensive. In fact, they should bleep all the offensive elements of songs by people like Ronan Keating, so that in future his lyrics would be as follows:

    We ***** ***
    ** **** **** **
    **** ** * ***********
    **** ***** ride **

Good post! What next though? At its current rate of progress, the UK will have self-censored itself out of existence by 2023.

At least Auntie Beeb missed the bit about Shane McGowan’s backside being dragged into the equation. Oh, wait, was it actually? :-)

Jim - What I can’t understand is how they think that faggot is offensive, when it’s clearly being used to refer to him as a “bowsie”, while scumbag, which is a dirty word relating to a semen-filled condom has fallen into common usage so is ok.

I love when the BBC tries to uphold the moral convictions of Britains tea drinkers. How hilarious it would be if ‘ fairytale’ caused a spate of mass faintings from middle aged wireless users. Ridiculous !!!

Maybe the BBC should have a phone vote to see what people think…

    Oh hang on!

Folks - I need a sub-editor on this blog. There was a missing ‘Not’ in the sentence about McColl calling McGowan ‘gay’. She wasn’t doing it, but you already knew that.

Secondly, I do recommend that SpEak You’re bRanes mentioned by Rosie. It’s very funny.

Peter Thatchell thinks it’s a good idea as they would have beeped a racial slur if that’s what he said in it’s place.

Brock - Thatchell, if he really believes that, is missing out on the subtleties of Irish slang. Did anyone ever hear that song and think, ’she’s calling him gay?’ Or do only the Irish realise that it can have another meaning?

I knew it. For years I was telling people she was inferring that McGowan’s character in the song was a bundle of sticks!

Honestly as a gay man I find this very silly.

While the word is offensive the song doesn’t condone it’s use. It’s just telling a story where the two characters are being deliberately nasty to each other.

Surely it’s more a lesson in how we shouldn’t use such language than anything else.

Hmmm… If the Beeb do this, I wonder what RTE would do if the campaign to get that Tom Waits song to #1 achieves it’s goal?

It is indeed a PC mess gone haywire… f******g m****ts.

Then again, the Beeb is the broadcaster that pulled such radical songs of revolution as “I shot the Sheriff” from playlists during the first Gulf War lest it offend or incite rebellion.

Mark - After so many years on the radio, it is daft that it’s suddenly infecting our minds?

Daragh - It also banned Bomb the Bass and Massive Attack.

Shane - in fairness to the Beeb, in the 1990s Massive Attack often incited me to random acts of violence, but only on grounds of musical taste, not any political reason.

What Christmas songs should they have edited to oblivion? My vote would have to go with anything by Shakin’ Stevens. Start bleeping it 5 seconds in and don’t stop until 2 seconds before the end.

Shane - the whole twenty years later thing just adds to the farce, as does the fact that the rest of the beeb doesn’t seem to care (thankfully)

Could it not all be a plot by some in the Beeb to ensure that it finally makes it to the top of the charts at Christmas as it was always supposed to do?

I’ve just looked at it online and Christ it’s in wide screen! So you can see me behind from behind, and I was hoping to be pulling in the ladies with me TeeVee appearances. I done the audience a few times now and I’ve been hoping that there might be a points system that if you get so many Q&A miles that that you can upgrade to being a panelist. There again, I’ve probably blown it all by saying “feck”.
