  • Animal Collective’s texty gig promotion

    May 20, 2008 @ 9:04 am | by Jim Carroll

Well done to all concerned who pulled off the Animal Collective late-night show in Whelan’s in Dublin last night.

The gig was supposed to be on in Tripod but was cancelled when the band missed their ferry. Well, they obviously got another ferry or a flight because a lot of mobile phones started to go mad from 7pm onwards with texts about the rescheduled show at Whelan’s.

By all accounts (more texts from the likes of Pedro), it was a fabulous gig - though there seems to be at least one fan who is not amused by what happened.

UPDATE Animal Collective give their side of the story here

Other than the ‘faggits’ comment, the guy has a point. just cause whelans is ace doesnt excuse the situation. I’m sure many of you would be well pissed off if it was put on in the aural graveyard that is The Village.

But still, for the guys who managed to pull it off… fair play. Why dont we do more gigs that way and let ticketmaster fuck off.

I was also pretty annoyed at the nature of the postponement last night but the gig was so good that I’d forgotten by the end of it. They really are a unique band and they bring much more to the live set. It felt like a rave at times. Great to see Avey Tare in full flow after the last time too. Atlas Sound was also impressive and worth checking out again in the Future Days. One thing that I am a bit annoyed about is Ticketmaster’s policy on refunds. I bought the ticket online and received an email saying I would have to post it to head office to organise the reimbursement. That’s a needless inconvenience.

As a matter of interest, was this a POD gig last night or a Foggy gig?

Tripod tickets were not being honoured for the Whelans gig. Pod said that the gig will be rescheduled and if ticket holders want then their original tickets will be valid otherwise they can get a refund. Not sure if that’s still the case considering what happened. My breaking down car meant I couldn’t make it but I saw them on Saturday night and they were amazing, everything that they should have been in November.

It’s going to take a lot to top that gig for me.

    Short summary:

Doors were scheduled to be open at 10.30.
Band only arrived in their van at 10.30 though.
I was queueing from 10 bells. Doors finally opened at 11.30 or thereabouts.
Foggy handed out free chips to the waiting crowd which was really cool.
Atlas Sound came on-stage at like 11.40 and played for about 30 to 40 minutes.
He was pretty good, but everyone was dying to see AC so there was a little impatience from our part.
The lads came on-stage about 12.30 and I think they played until 2.15. Something like that.
Unbelievable show. Had a perfect spot right in front of Avey (whose vocals are even better live than on record, which is saying something).
One of the best Whelans gigs I have been to. Easily.

Best part of the night though:
Meeting the two hot American sisters who were on an European adventure.
    Yessah!
    ;)

spent around £100 on buses and accomodation only to find out gig was cancelled when outside of belfast. after being assured by ticketmaster that the gig would definitely not be going ahead that night I turned around and went home only to fin gig went ahead. am gutted and very angry, and not alone going by the comments on myspace. ticketmaster stll refusing to admit the gig went ahead. jim use your influence to rearrange it, this time for a weekend.

    alex - I really don’t understand why you’re talking about Ticketmaster. They’re a ticket agency - not a promoter or a band.

The band’s Tripod show was promoted by POD Concerts and the tickets were sold by Ticketmaster. I have read elsewhere that Ticketmaster called people and emailed them to tell them that the gig was cancelled.

The Whelan’s show was arranged between the band and promoters Foggy Notions. Tickets were sold at the door and had nothing to do with Ticketmaster

It was a decision made by the band to play the Whelan’s show after they had to cancel the Tripod show and they’re the ones to aim all your ire at for this, not Ticketmaster.

cheers jim. but it was ticketmaster that told me that the gig would definitely not be going ahead.that bit of misinformation proved costly. accept that it was the bands decision ultimately but little consolation. imagine there’s little chance they’ll play dublin again this year.

But Alex, the gig that Ticketmaster were talking about and were selling tickets for did NOT go ahead. There was no misinformation on their behalf - they were selling tickets for a show which was cancelled and which did not take place. Like I said at comment 16 above, tickets for the Whelan’s show were sold at the door and not by Ticketmaster.

To be honest, it does sound like a pretty shitty situation; if you knew the right people, you’d get to find out about the Whelan’s gig… which left the rest out in the cold. IMO, not the best solution for the missed-gig problem.

The band have posted an explanation on their myspace. It sounds like they really pulled out all the stops to try and make the best out of a bad situation, to be honest.

What I want to know is will that guy on myspace pay into the next AC gig just to give a “hostile reaction”.

Guess you’ll know if hear someone repeatedly shouting out ‘faggits’

If everyone who had ticks for original show of known about the gig in whelans there would have been a riot outside!! Coz no matter what, people would have been disappointed anyway considering the difference in capacities of both venues! Had tripod put the curfew back like AC had asked and not given some ridiculous excuse about people having to get buses home then everyone would have been happy!! Bad call from tripod and they should be to blame.
