I shouldn’t like the Ting Tings at all. But there’s somethign about them that I can’t put my finger on that I really like.

I think they’re awesome - really smart pop. Got a couple of texts on the show on Saturday night about their live gig though, saying that they only played 6 songs. But, hey, what an amazing 6 songs they are! And it’s six more songs than, say, Radiohead or Muse have…..

    Ah Jim,

You’re being very light on the Ting Tings..

Do you not think there’s a bit too much hype around the m considering they only have six songs?

I think The Ting Tings’ songs are very average indeed but the arrangements and production are very clever.

nialler - I always reach for my revolver when someone mentions “hype” and I’m sure they have more than six songs (they have an album coming out, not a mini-album).

And the Ting Tings are far from an overnight success that some people seem to be banging on about. The very first journalist I can remember writing about them was the mighty Unarocks on her blog last May and there was a lot of coverage about their previous band Dear Eskimo.

Then, there was their appearance on the BBC coverage of Glastonbury (my missus was raving about that one). All thru last year, Ting Tings tracks have been doing the rounds, building the word about them. I’ve been playing them on the Saturday night show since last June/July - the rest of the station finally followed suit in January ;-)

So, no, I dont think it’s hype.

    I liked Simon Reynolds’ line:
‘The missing link between LCD Soundsystem and Republica. ‘

Also, is it just me or is the guy from The Ting Tings trying too hard to look like George Michael circa Faith?

p.s. Muse’s most recent album kicks ass.

Conor I think hit’s the nail on the head for me. I always find my ears pricking up when I hear them being played.

A few months back I watched a KCRW session they did. They seem like a pretty nice and unassuming pair which is more than can be said for most NME pushed bands.

*Snide, jealous and bitchy comment about Katie White’s chops, or lack thereof goes here.*

I’m with jim on the whole hype issue, i take an instant dislike to bands who have hype surrounding them, and they have to work extremely hard to win me over. i was working at the gig on saturday night, and i have to say, even though i wasn’t able to give it my full attention, i was extremely impressed with what i heard from the band. and i wasn’t keeping count, but i could’ve sworn they played more than six songs..they had a two song encore for a start…

DoDos any use Jim? Some randomer over here was bigging them up to me like a motherfucker.

donny - i thought the missing link between LCD Soundsystem and Republica was Girls Aloud?

conor - for some reason, i’ve not taken a lot of notice of the guy in the Ting Tings

ian - theres a v good review in today’s Irish Indo of their Village gig by Ed Power which says much the same thing. Basically, they can write very good, very catchy pop songs

ciaran - exactly. Only 8 songs - but 8 amazing songs. See, the ting tings have added 2 more songs to their canon since 11.30am this morning. Beat that, Muse

pedro - the album rocks but I dont think it’s emo or trance enough for u.

And the lack of love from all of you for Dorothy Ashby is heart-breaking, absolutely heart-breaking.

Pedro, I also endorse The Dodos.

You should get the latest Renaissance compilation Jim, it’s brilliant. Oh, and the new Panic At The Disco too.
    ;)

I’ll give them a go then Ian. Never been a big fan of French Kiss Records though.

Re: The DoDos - there’s a French punk-pop band called The Dodoz who are releasing their first single in the UK and Ireland end of April. No news yet if they’re touring at the same time as The DoDos…

And everyone thought the DoDo was extinct….

Actually, theres also a French band called The Do who are quite fine too - well, that track “On My Shoulders” is quite fine.

its a throw up between afro harping or the rubaiyat of dorothy ashby for my favourite ashby album but myself when young is definitely her best song..any word on dublin daedelus gig, he brought the house down in limerick…

Peter - you have restored my faith in On The Record readers and proved yourself yet again to be a gentleman with impeccable taste.

Picked up a copy of “The rubaiyat…” a few weeks ago and have played it to death. Amazing stuff.

No word on the Daedelus gig in Dublin - great album though

The rest of The Do album is quite good too - but the singer’s voice is a bit too whiny and kooky for me. (BTW the new Camille album is disappointing)

The Do, The Dodos and The Dodoz are all touring Europe in May and June. (In Nijmegen in the Netherlands, The Do play on the night after The Dodos, at the same venue!). They’ll probably all end up playing the same summer festival…

daedelus… was UNREAL!!!! defo contender for gig of the year. and he’s a blooming nice chap too

mate was talking to him for a bit after and he said that he was going to do a more mellow hip hop set, but that quickly went out the window after the reaction he got from the crowd.. mixed and mashed everything from gentle hip hop beats to really heavy electronica.. last time i sweated that much at a gig was roni size a few years ago in spirit

Was at the gig on Sat and thought the Ting Tings were good- wasnt expecting a long set from them since they have only released the couple of singles. Some great catchy songs there though so wasnt complaining- Katie easy on the eye as well;-)

Did think Cap Pas Cap were excellent though- or as I had texted into the show ‘pretty damn good’! Have been listening to their ep the last few months and it was the first time seeing them live.

As for The Do- I have been raving about them since the last visit to France. Great album ‘A Mouthful’- some very catchy tunes there and think you can stream them from their official site. http://www.amouthful.fr/
Alas they are only touring France at the moment.

Pretty pissed off I missed Daedelus considering I as about 40 foot away. Heard him soundcheck, sounded superb.

That latest EP is his best stuff yet. Hope the album is as good.

Great to see This Will Destroy You in there, Jim. Their gig in Whelans last friday was incredible. An hour of sublime aural battery but there is real depth and emotion there too. Amazing band and nice guys also.
