Phantom 105.2 playlist, Saturday April 5

Filed under: Playlists — Jim Carroll @ 6:49 am

As played on Phantom 105.2, Saturday April 5, 10pm-midnight.

Yes, we’re back in the radio business. More new music than any other show on your radio (well, any other show on your radio on a Saturday night) meant plays for White Denim (two tracks from their forthcoming thriller of a debut album), A Place To Bury Strangers, Times New Viking, the amazing Kit, New Bloods, DoDos, Fleet Foxes, El Guincho and She & Him. There were also berths on the show for Bad Brains (I’ve been reintroducing myself to their “Rock for Light” album of late), Minor Threat, James Brown and Tough Alliance (“A New Chance” is one of those 2007 albums I’m only getting around to now - if you like Studio or any of that slinky Swedish groove-pop, you’ll like this), as well as new music from The Notwist (the new album is delicious), Gemma Hayes (her new album is also a wow) and Camille (that is the French Camille, the Camille with the excellent new “Music Hole” album).

White Denim “Lets Talk About It” (Full Time Hobby)
Born Ruffians “I Need A Life” (Warp)
Bad Brains “Big Takeover” (Caroline)
Minor Threat “Think Again” (Dischord)
A Place To Bury Strangers “Don’t Think Lover” (Killer Pimp)

Sea Wolf “Leaves In The River” (Dangerbird)
James Brown “Night Train” (People)
Hypnotic Brass Ensemble “War” (Self-release)
El Guincho “Palmitos Park” (Discoteca Océano)
Tough Alliance “Silly Crimes” (Sincerely Yours)
The Black Keys “All You Never Wanted” (V2/Co-Op)

On the back of the enthusiasm from this blog, I went to see White Denim in London last week and they were just amazing, totally off the hook. Can’t wait to hear the album.

And great to see that at least one radio person has picked up on Tough Alliance, She & Him and A Place To Bury Strangers!

Rock For Light is a bona fide classic. I wish i coud catch this show. Will it ever be podcast? Or even just a web stream, a la Donal Dineen’s shows on todayfm?

    Re:White Denim

Jim, do you know when the album is availble and if there are any Irish dates planned?

matt - the notwist album is beautiful

bearcatcher - glad to know that someone takes my recommendations seriously!

leaveitout - yeah and the 1st Bad Brains album is the business too.

As for the podcast/streams, there is a live stream but no delayed stream or podcast. I know station management were looking into this but have heard nothing of late.

peter - album released on June 27 and there are no Irish dates as of yet.

Is if fair to say Jim that White Denim are your main indie tip for ‘08? Following in good footsteps after Broken Social Scene & The Hold Steady in recent years.
You might be backing the wrong ‘White’ though as White Lies look set to be a breakthrough act this year…

Kangaroo - It depends on your definition of “tipping” and “breakthrough”. I traditionally tip acts in January - http://www.ireland.com/theticket/articles/2007/1228/1198509868452.html - but I think White Denim will appeal to lots and lots of people. Certainly, they were the best band I saw at SXSW last month by a country mile. Whether they’ll be a “breakthrough act” depends on your definition

Actually listened to your show for the first time this week because my old age started to catch up with me and I stayed in.
Some really good stuff, and the new Gemma Hayes track sounded very itneresting.

“Actually listened to your show for the first time this week because my old age started to catch up with me and I stayed in”

My old age has caught up with me so much I can’t stay awake for it. And if I do I can’t remember what I’ve been listening to.

I’m probably not your target audience.

Commercial popularity is so fickle, who could possibly predict it?

I downloaded a big pile of music from a blog called aquarium-drunkard last year. Mostly American music, newish artists matched with older obscure acts. Its a great site, highly recommendable. Anyway, of all the stuff I listened to, White Denim was one of the bands that made me sit up and pay attention. They had such an immediate punch to their songs (ShakeShakeShake, Dark Sided Computer Mouth) as well as slow burners like Lets Talk About It. That guitar riff just gets into your head and stays there all day. The recordings are wild, kick-arse, frenetic hatchet jobs. I’d love to see them live because I’d love to see how they pull a song like Dark Sided… (which doesn’t seem to have a proper beginning, middle or end) off. It gets me jumping about the room like no other song from last year. I think their brilliant and it put a big smile on my face when I heard them on the radio for the first time.

kDamo - that’s my core audience: old folks who don’t go out on Saturdays. And yes, the Gemma Hayes album is very interesting

Liz - that’s my core audience: old folks who don’t go out on Saturdays and who can’t stay awake.

peter - I have a feeling the White Denim fan-club is going to grow and grow. I saw them live before I heard them on record and I just couldn’t get over how they pulled it all off. Songs slip and slide all over the place yet never lose their pace or place. And all three musicians can PLAY. On record, it just sounds loud and fun and riotous and messy and AWESOME!

Someone texted in as I played it, simply going “YAHOO” and that just summed it up for me. Music to make you go YAHOO on a saturday night

“caught White Denim on TV the other night and wasn’t too sure what to make of them.”

As it turns out I was actually watching Black Kids. I think I must be colour blind.

Could have sworn I commented here to tell you about a White Denim session over on http://www.daytrotter.com/ this week.
Would this have been taken down for some reason Jim?
    Cheers
