  • Electric Picnic line-up - first impressions

    March 26, 2008 @ 9:45 pm | by Jim Carroll

Well, here’s the line-up for Electric Picnic 2008:

Sex Pistols, Sigur Ros, Grinderman, Franz Ferdinand, George Clinton & The P-Funk Allstars, My Bloody Valentine, Goldfrapp, Christy Moore, Wilco, The Gossip, Duffy, Underworld, Tinariwen, Foals, CSS, Tindersticks, New Young Pony Club, Josh Ritter, Lisa Hannigan, Cathy Davey, That Petrol Emotion, The Breeders, Michael Franti & Spearhead, Sinead O’Connor, The Waterboys, The Roots, Kila, Micah P Hinson, Conor Oberst (Bright Eyes), Hayseed Dixie, Candi Staton, Juana Molina, Turin Brakes, Faust, Midnight Juggernauts, Tartit, Hadouken!, Silver Apples, Mark Geary, Teitur, Blitzen Trapper, Absentee, Balanescu Quartet, Lou Rhodes, Adrian Crowley, One Day International, The Yard Dogs, Tobias Froberg, Boss Volenti, Dawn Landes, Constantines, Yacht, Lionheart Brothers, Large Mound, Emmy the Great, Kormac & the BSQ Band, Jape, The Noisettes, Dublin Gospel Choir.

First reason to be cheerful: SILVER APPLES! The fucking SILVER APPLES! Playing in Co Laois. Hell, yeah

Second reason to be cheerful: WILCO! Great to see them on the list, especially as they’ve been on every possible line-up since year one.

Third reason to be cheerful: BALANESCU QUARTET! Awesome, awesome, awesome

Main reason to be fearful: Christy Moore. Ah lads, c’mon. Tell me this is some kind of situationalist prank. What next, the Wolfe Tones?

Weekend tickets are €240 (no day tickets) and a family camping ticket is €480 for 2 adults & up to 4 kids under 12 with access to the designated family campsite. Tickets go on sale on Friday at 9am.

There’s oodles and oodles of space for your thoughts below

Hmmm…okay, my “in the know” mate wasn’t so “in the know” after all. That’s the most disappointed in an Electric Picnic line-up I’ve been in the five years it’s been going. Check out Roskilde - they’ve got the best Picnic by a mile (My Bloody Valentine) plus Neil Young, Radiohead, MIA and Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy! AND it’s cheaper!

I’m just back from the launch and hearing the Dublin Gospel Choir belting out popular songs from some of the headline acts you’d think the lineup was something amazing - it’s not !! A (very)few ‘electric picnic’ type acts - yes - but it feels like seeing (and walking away from) James Blunt on the main stage a few years ago - A lot done …a lot more to be done in my opinion!

Im 32 - the line ups lame - if I got a free ticket I still wouldnt go to Poxegen - Ill probably still by 2 tickets, on the basis that its gotta get better. There are some good acts (MBV, Sigor Ros, Underworld, Wilco, Grinderman, Tindersticks) and some interesting ones (Kormac, Yacht) - but this reminds me of the kinda lazy lineups that used to play @ Feile when I was a kid

It does seem a bit lame. I don’t see the point in having the sex pistols on. Such a joke. Needs a couple of big bands but who exactly? Maybe we’ve overdosed on gigs the last few years.
I still think there are some interesting bands in there but definitely needs a spark of some sort.
The press release went on about the cookery slot a bit too much..sad.. do the support act make the soup?? oh dear..

3 Neil- As far as i know Roskilde is not run for profit and the majority of the staff are volunteers and not paid.So not really the same,Benicassim is probably closer and 100 euros cheaper per ticket which would probably get you there on a cheap flight to valencia?
I think the EP line-up is missing a few of the big act’s who will be announced later.
    Portishead maybe??

A lot of reasons i thought Ep was so popular was all the other stuff you could do and get involved in other thn music?
But Ryan tubrdiy was not what i expected.

I don’t see what the problem with Christy Moore playing is? He’s a great addition to the variety of stuff available to you when you’re floating around half cut in the sunshine. Really looking forward to seeing Juana Molina again, she’s great. It’s cool that Jape is playing, but other than him and a handful of others the list isn’t really that exciting. I’m more excited about finding shit I don’t know about.

I know people are alarmed at the lack of proper ‘headline’ acts (Franz Ferdinand do not fit the bill) and hopefully there is one or two massive names to be announced.

However, Sigur Rós should be awesome, although I was underwhelmed by Hvarf-Heim. (Having said that, their new album is expected before August.)

Nialler9 has confirmed on his blog that Super Extra Bonus Party will be playing, despite being omitted from the official announcement.
Also, much more to look forward to: Josh Ritter, Underworld, Adrian Crowley, Cathy Davey, Tindersticks, One Day International… Should be a good weekend.

Maybe I’m easily pleased, but all of these are definitely worth a look. It’s like one big long episode of ‘Later with Jools Holland’ except I’ll be in a field instead of on my couch.

@Justin - You can bring your knitting to stop you nodding off. I bet I’ll see you there and I bet you’ll be having the time of your life. Well, once you find someone to mind your kid. If I see you there with child in tow I’ll never speak to you again. It seems like they brought out a special family ticket just for me but I’m fucked if I’m bringing my posse down to it. How are you supposed to enjoy a festival with your kids there. Children should be not seen and not heard until they have their own house and a steady income.

A real disappointment. Maybe I’ve taken it up the wrong way but I had always thought of EP as being in line with the Foggy Notions/indie crowd. It’s great to see Sigur Ros and I’ll go to see Wilco (who were brilliant at Primavera last year but I felt were a little lacklustre in Vicar St) and of course MBV. But after that it’s a disaster. So many brilliant indie acts have emerged over the past 12 months and they’ll surely be touring this summer (look at Primavera for Christ sake…) and none seem to be on the bill. Over the past two years we’ve had Yo La Tengo, Deerhoof, Broken Social Scene, Electrelane, Modest Mouse, Clap Your Hands Say Yeah and Patrick Wolf. This year we have what looks like one of those Tom Dunne compilation tapes. Bright Eyes, CSS: it’s lazy and I really expected better.

They sure do aero - I feel like Joe Duffy today. Again.

In all honesty, there has never been - and will never be - an Irish festival line-up which pleases everyone. I think every Electric Picnic line-up has had its weak spots and this one is no different.

And while EP has never been solely about the line-up for me and many others, I can understand why many potential EP-goers are disappointed at the list. But when you look at the bands that people are saying should be at EP on some boards - the real flavour of the day indie stuff - you kinda get to thinking that these punters should really rush out and grab the last of the Oxegen tickets or book a ticket for a European festival. Electric Picnic is not the only festival happening this summer, you know.

All of which goes to show that you really should only trust sources who have shown time and time again that they ALWAYS get the right info.

Like telling you My Bloody Valentine were playing EP months ago. And that Laughing Lenny Cohen was coming to Dublin.

    Ahem

That list yesterday was hillarious. What gave it away was the spelling mistakes - one list mentioned “Nial Rodgers” from Chic. Hello? Talk about a red flag.

I think thats a disappointing line-up for the price of the ticket. It makes Oxegen look positively cutting edge. Its like a sort of mid 90s secondary school reuinion party. There is a more than faint sense of music for groovy oldsters about it all, so many of the acts last released relavent music in the 90s, how depressing. Where is all the new indie?? WHERE?? There is a massive indie shaped hole at the centre of that line-up. It feels like half an electric picnic. Like a sunday line-up.

EP isn’t all about the line-up, I agree, but last year the promoters made a mess of some other aspects of it as well. The campsite was overcrowded and the bars shut at 10 o’clock. It hasn’t lived up to its original promise of being a “boutique” festival, IMO.

I can’t believe there have been 48 comments and barely a mention of the Sex Pistols apart from one person saying they are a’joke’. Am I missing something here? Does everyone see them as a joke now? You do all remember that they, along with The Clash, Buzzcocks, Siouxsie et al ushered in a new musical revolution in the late seventies that we are still feeling the effects of today, don’t you? They also have, in Johnny Rotten, the most compelling and provocative vocalist ever to front a band. And this is the first time they have EVER played in Ireland. Yet, no-one here gives a shit. Depressing.

Still, apart from a handful of brilliant, unmissable acts (Pistols, MBV, Goldfrapp, Wilco, Juana Molina, Balanescu Quartet, Sigur Ros, Faust) it’s a very disappointing line-up. There were strong rumours of Massive Attack, Mogwai and The Notwist playing but no sign of them. Gutted, to say the least.Hopefully, at leat one of them will be added later. Instead we have Loads of unremarkable UK and Irish acts and some bands I’ve never heard of before. Tartit? The Yard Dogs? Midnight Juggernauts? Lionheart Brothers? Nope, me neither.

Christy Moore? That’s just like a bad dream. Sinead O’Connor? She hasn’t done anything of any worth for almost 2 decades other than make us watch her slow, mental breakdown. What the hell are these 2 doing on the bill. Bizarre. Kila, Mark Geary,New Young Pony Club, Large Mound, Hayseed Dixie and the new sound of Motown herself, it’s Welsh Pop Idol reject turned ’sultry’, Mazzy Star rip-off merchant herself Duffy. Really enticing, isn’t it!

delighted i’m missing EP this year.
the lineup itself is pretty awful.
little quality, far too much mediocrity.
the vibe of the festival has really gone down since it started, reminds me of oxegen c.2004
of the big names, i’d only go see MBV and Sigur Ros, even though MBV could go very wrong, and Sigur Ros at Oxegen ‘05 wasn’t exactly mindblowing.
of the smaller ones i’d like to see, most i’ve seen before, and none of the rest are “must see”.
considering it’d cost somewhere in the region of 400-500 quid all things considered, i’m glad i won’t be there.
most of my friends who’ve gone the last few years don’t plan on going.

maybe 515 and bodytonic can save it when they announce their lineups….

Well, it strikes me as a good if not great line up to coin a dunphyism . Its about 7 or 8 acts short of being a great line up.

    The Positives

Sigur Ros, Wilco , and MBV are on there and they’re three of my favourite bands ever. The new Goldfrapp album is super so she’s getting a special mention too.

Pretty pleased to see the Breeders, Tindersticks, the Roots, Juana Molina, Balanescu Quartet, Lou Rhodes, Lisa Hannigan, Cathy Davey and Underworld there. And Franz Ferdinand even though its obviously not the done thing to admit to liking them anymore!

    The Negatives

Would be interested to see if these Foals guys live up to the hype and Micah P Hinson too, but overall there seems to be a distinct lack of fresh new acts compared to previous years line-ups and quite a few acts in the ‘I’ve never heard of them category’ - One Day International, The Yard Dogs, Tobias Froberg, Boss Volenti, Dawn Landes, Constantines, Yacht, Lionheart Brothers, Large Mound, Emmy the Great, Kormac & the BSQ Band, Silver Apples. Nope, new to me.

There are a few acts that fall into the well past their sell by date/not my cup of tea front on here too- most obviously Christy Moore, Sex Pistols, and George Clinton.

What does the line-up need to go from good to great?

So not naming acts that played last year, or acts playing at that hideous puking teenagers festival at punchestown, or those that don’t have a new album to promote, who are we left with?

Of course Portishead would be a pretty great start - the new album is excellent, they’ve still got it.

And how about some quality indie fare? Panda Bear, Beirut, Patrick Watson, Elbow, Feist, Iron & Wine, Spoon, Tapes’n’Tapes, Midlake, Joanna Newsom, Martha Wainwright?

Some good newish acts - Hercules and Love Affair, Vampire Weekend, Yeasayer, Laura Marling maybe?

Nick Cave appearing with the bad seeds and playing his brilliant new album instead of the tedious bad joke that is the Grinderman’s oeuvre would help.

Another quality dance act? Modeselektor, Field.

Some hip hop? Del tha funky homespun, Dizee Rascal maybe?

I’d like Kittser and Gemma Hayes in there too.

i dunno what the problem is,ep is always great fun even if the line up isnt the best.
Having seen Christy Moore at glasto i can say he is excellent at a festival and easily one of the greatest live performers in the country.

I don’t care what anyone says about this line-up, I’d crawl over a bed of rusty nettles in the nip to smell the exhaust from the tour bus that brought Sigur Rós to EP!

Quint@53 - I agree that the Sex Pistols position as one of the most seminal musical acts of all time is pretty much assured. But have you seen footage of them since they reformed? It’s hideous, man, hideous. And John Lydon may have been provocative and compelling once. He’s pretty embarrassing now though.

heh, only in Ireland could someone justify paying so much for what they see as an average lineup, because of the fun they’ll have anyway. i guess POD have it sussed. if 20-something proffessionals willing to fork over wads of cash to basically have some fun in a field for weekend, then what’s the point of getting big or quality acts, just get some mediocre bands and singer-songwriters doing the festival circuit, a coupel of big(ish) names, and watch the money roll in anyway.

and people complain about rip-off Ireland….

i’m happy my money won’t be funding Ryan Tubridy talking bollox, Fossett’s circus, or Kevin flippin Thornton giving cookery classes.
i’m sure i can find some other fun for the weekend….

I’ll be heading to Cois Fharraige instead,,a probable shite line-up ,but theres a beech and an open air party in Kilkee Town.. and its not €240..

I dont think the EP line up is awful but the price and the fact that the capacity is upped to 32,000 this year just put me off..

Did anyone hear Tom Dunne and John Reynolds great big Picnic 08 love-in on Pet Sounds just after the announcement?

Tom Dunne:’Wow John. Fantastic line-up. Really is FANTASTIC. Just FANTASTIC.

John REymolds: I know. We’re really happy with it.

Tom: It seems to be strongest line-up yet, John. (!!????)

John: Yes, it’s definitely our strongest line-up ever. And there’s loads more to be announced!

Tom: There’s so much there already, we’ll be here all night, heh hehe.Fantastic.

John: Yeah, Definitely our strongest line-up yet. An absolute smorgasboard of great music. ha ha ha

    Tom: Fantastic

John: We have a cooking stage this year.

    Tom: Fantastic.

John: Yes, it really is our strongest line-up sinece we began in 04.

    Tom: Fantstic

    ….and so on.

I think it’s safe to say John Reynolds is in for a major shock when he starts reading the discussion forums.

The fact that Wilco are playing is just about enough for me, the best live band I’ve ever seen and am never dissapointed by them. But on top of that there’s quite a few bands I’d want to check out MBV, Sigur Ros, George Clinton, Goldfrapp, Conor Oberst, also Midnight Juggernauts are a really great live act.

There’ll be more to be announced and there’s no way you’d see all those side shows for 240e. Plus I unashamedly admit that I love a festival for the atmosphere too and EP has one of the best atmospheres of any festival anywhere.

Anyone who thinks that Electric picnic fans are not about the music…. obviously doesnt know much about music and lives in the charts. Anyone who was dissapointed by last years Electric Picnic … obviously had nowhere near the amount of fun I had. Anyone who cannot see the difference between sitting in a field and having a laugh and going to electric picnic …. has either never had a session in a field or has never been to or had the craic at electric picnic and probably just went to their fav bands on the list and then slept in their tent till the next one was on. Line up isnt amazing yet but give it a minute. Plus it is gonna be unreal as usual anyway.

How the hell are you supposed to see any acts when theres no line-up times?! Thats shit. For Oxygen the independent had a ‘oxygen planner’ so you should schedule your whole weekend. We ended up seeing loads of acts even when we were pretty disoriented/drunk. For EP I’ll probably end up missing half the weekend! BOOO!! BOOO!!
