  • Choice Music Prize - it’s happening again

    November 28, 2007 @ 1:19 pm | by Jim Carroll

The shortlist for the Choice Music Prize will be announced on Wednesday January 9th and the live event will take place in Vicar Street, Dublin on Wednesday February 27th.

The winning act will stagger home with a cheque for €10,000 (courtesy of the Irish Recorded Music Association (IRMA) and the Irish Music Rights Organisation (IMRO)) and a smashing piece of glassware (courtesy of industry body, Recorded Artists & Performers (RAAP)).

The shortlist is selected by a panel of 12 men and women, good and true, drawn from the ranks of those who write about and/or talk about music for a living. You’ll find out who they are when the shortlist is announced. And yes, they’re the ones to blame.

Declaration of interest: I’m one of the co-founders of this and am also the chairman of the judging panel.

Good stuff, I like you Jim. You put some glitter and shine on the dullest months of the year.

I have a serious question though, when journalists turn PR for their own event, who pays for their drinks at the lig?

I thought it was a good year for Irish albums - Super Extra Bonus Party, Cathy Davey, Dry County, The Radio, Hooray for Humans, Somadrone. Should be an interesting shortlist.

daniel - to be fair, its also here - http://www.irishtimes.com/blogs/ontherecord/about/

markg - obviously you have not been at either Choice Music Prize events to date because there’s no lig or free drink, dude.

rasputin - yes, I can’t wait to see what our crew of (experienced, smart, knowledgable, beautiful and honourable) judges come up with.

I can’t believe it took nearly four hours for one of the resident OTR smart alecs to come up with that one. Standards are slipping round here, boys and girls

Perhaps folk were afraid of daring to speak the unspeakable to save you being inundated with phone calls from eager beaver marketing folk bombarding you with nonsense like “reach”, “fit” and “touch base”.

MCD would want to get their fuckign act togethr. While we’re all condemmed to over priced tickets and substandard conditions while we wait for the point to reopen they could at least hire a propper roofer. http://www.independent.ie/entertainment/music/abrupt-ending-as-kings-bring-house-down-literally-1232551.html

I have absolutely no idea what that last comment has to do with the Choice Music Prize. Perhaps RoDizzel would like to explain?

Ro - no worries! i’ll leave your moan up in case anyone has anything to add. I know I shouldnt be surprised when posts about one thing turn into comments about something else but I always am.

BTW there was some moaning about this yesterday at this post - http://www.irishtimes.com/blogs/ontherecord/2007/11/28/three-bruce-shows-in-dublin-next-may/

    Hi Jim,

Quick question: there must be loads of albums that are just being sold at bands’ gigs around the country or on websites. How would the Choice Music Prize People know about these albums? Do bands send you their albums that they’re selling online or at their gigs?

The standards better be high this year Jim, ye’ve got some serious competition from the Meteors! The Brit awards have nothing on us!

conor - go to the website - http://www.choicemusicprize.com - click on the “eligibility” tab and you will see we have taken this into account. It’s down to the 12 judges to select the albums and they can choose any album which meets all those criteria - including self-released albums for sale at gigs only and albums released only online (if only Radiohead were Irish, eh?)

Colin - Our standards are always high, dude

Not if the non voting chairman with a big fucking stick has anything to do with it.

Anyways, almost everyone was saying last year that Si Schroeder was a dead cert and look what happened.

Cathy Davey all the way for me for the Choice gong. She did a short but sublime set in the Odessa Club in Dublin last night. Spine tinglingly brilliant. Her cover of ‘You Send Me’ was definitely one of my musical highlights of the year.
On another note, any thoughts Jim on the fact that John Kelly/Phantom djs are absent from the Meteor DJ nominations?

ian - as any of the judges who have sat on the panel before will tell you, I’m there to provoke debate, antagonise people and make sure no windows are broken. THEY decide who wins (the best get out of jail free card in the world)

ro - My only thoughts about the Meteors have to do with how the nominations are arrived at and why no-one ever questions this. With Choice Music Prize, the whole process is completely 100% transparent and above board. With the Meteors, well, it’s not so clear. Very surprised though that I didnt get a best DJ nomination, I have to say… ;-)
