As played on Phantom 105.2, Saturday September 15, 10pm-midnight

Loads and loads and loads of new stuff - well new to me at any rate. If you haven’t done so already, check out Windmill’s album “Puddle City Racing Lights” on Melodic. If you want big crunchy guitars in your life, Kinksi, Les Savy Fav (playing Dublin’s Crawdaddy on October 27), Health and Blitzen Trapper are for you. If you just want some great mighty tunes, check out Envelopes, The Young Republic, Club 8 and The Royal We. Big up to Waterford lasses You’re Only Massive (see below for what you should call your label) whose cracking electro reminded some of our listeners of CSS. Also new sounds from truly wonderful albums from Robert Wyatt, Beirut, Sharon Jones & The Dap Kings, King Creosote and PJ Harvey. And - at long last - we found a recording of Bat For Lashes doing “I’m On Fire”. Lovely hurling.

    Windmill “Ashmatic” (Melodic)
Envelopes “Life On The Beach” (Brille)
The Young Republic “Modern Plays” (End of the Road)

Les Savy Fav “Patty Lee” (Wichita)
Blitzen Trapper “Devil’s A Go Go” (Sub Pop)
Hafdis Huld “Diamonds On My Belly” (Red Grape)
The Royal We “All The Rage” (Geographic)

Finally tuned in on Saturday - great show! I loved that You’re Only Massive track and Cadence Weapon and Flying Lotus.

Now if only the rest of Phantom’s music output was as good - seriously dude, what’s with the lame music on during daytime hours?

Club 8 “Whatever You Want” (Labrador)

    TUNE!

Drat, wish I had tuned in online on saturday. Sounds like it was way more entertaining than the rugby (is there still a fatwa on the oval ball here?)

“No Diggity” is indeed a marvellous tune. Lisa Hannigan and friends did a version of it at the Turning Pirate night during the week, hence why I dusted it off for a spin. I played it and the building did not shake and the foundations did not rock.

Hot damn it! The one weekend I leave the country and our song is played. Thanks for playing it, and the record label top top tip. Just a note that the beat is a track by Alex Gopher called Motorcycle.

Oh wait, silly me, Bill Withers isn’t dead. How embaressing, I was sure he was jamming with Curtis.

    Anyway …

The Blackstreet song, the humming bit they do, it’s lifted from “Grandma’s Hands” by Bill Withers. I don’t know if it’s a sample or if the Blackstreet lads sang it themselves but that’s definately where they got it from. “Lovely Day” is beyond cheesey but there’s some great stuff on his live at Carnegee Hall album.

I think it was a Withers sample actually, I remember reading it at the time. Love that piano bit too.

“Love Phantom, but some of the DJ’s have seriously annoying voices! Not you, but def two others I can think of straight off…”

There’s are high quotient of bearable DJ’s on Phantom, a fairly high achievment considering the profession. The only one I can’t listen to is Sinister Prat. Irelands Zane Lowe…I’m sure he’s an alright fella, but on radio he’s fake.

Sinister Pete, ireland’s Zane Lowe??? You’ve obviously never listened to Zane Lowe’s show because it is MILES ahead of Sinister Pete for new music and enthusiasm. Sinister Pete’s show is like a bad indie Smashie & Nicey.

Stringing things together, I saw her do a version “grandma’s hands” a couple of years ago as part of a jazz quartet.

I think Sinister Pete is great! The Weather Bike is a brilliant idea and I listen for it every morning - something telling you what it feels like to be outside it far more useful that a weather forecast. I like his style on the radio too… Y’all just hatin’ ;)
