  • Today FM’s shapely figures

    August 23, 2007 @ 4:42 pm | by Jim Carroll

The first hard data from today’s JNLR book to make it our way shows very good news for Today FM.

Ian Dempsey, Matt Cooper, Ray Foley and Tony “Hey! It’s Tony! Fenton!” Fenton have added 15,000, 13,000, 24,000 (you read that right) and 17,000 (the Tony revival starts here) extra listeners respectively to the audiences they were getting a year ago.

However, 11,000 people have decided they’ve enough of the other Ray. That’s really 11,001 people turning off Ray D’Arcy because I’ve had enough of him too (more music, less chat, Ray dude), but no-one asked me.

Wonder where those mid-morning listeners have gone? No! They wouldn’t, would they? Hold on a darn tooting second….

You haven’t mentioned your own figures, or even those of your stations. And I don’t think its being too Dublin oriented!

Daniel - “stations”?? Who do you think I am, Denis O’Brien???

Here’s the unbiased word from RTE:

In the Dublin market, FM104 and 98FM both fell by two points to 21% and 16% respectively Spin, Q102 and Country Mix were all unchanged at 12%, 10% and 3% respectively. Phantom recorded 2% for the eight months from October 31 when it began broadcasting.

Full stats and figures are here - http://www.bci.ie/documents/prel%20jnlr%20Jul%2006-Jun%2007%2023%20Aug..pdf

How do people like Ray Foley…the guy is so completely unfunny plus like seemingly half of Irish radio he plays up a country accent and culchieness that he just doesn’t have.

ray foley is a very very good dj i’ve been listing to him since the blast where he pulled in better night time viewers than any of his rivels and as for his country accent WELL he is from mayo. it’s clear that today fm put a lot of tought into there dj’s because some listners like a laugh between songs something r.t.e. has left out just listen to the shite like rick o’shea and the fact that they gave marty wheelen a breakfest show that was plane stupid

If you don’t like Ray, don’t listen to the lad! Pretty simple. He’s an excellent dj and after radio is primarily entertainment not education. If you want education go watch the discovery channel or take night classes. TRFS is just a little bit of fun for your lunchtime!!!

Mother of God !! the number of Opinionated arsebags that worry what Ray Foley thinks regarding this blog is extreme. You should possibly drag yourselves knuckles dragging on the ground to Heuston Station, hop on a train and visit the rest of Ireland i.e. OUTSIDE THE PALE and see how the other half live. Ray Foley is the voice of the people , he is witty and crass all in the same 30 second timeslot. Those begrudgers would really need to put down their BATTTTHHHEEERR BOOOOORGERS and realize that amazingly the centre of the world is not Dublin .. People speak with quite different accents in t he rest of Ireland (and even the World)RAY YOU ROCK MAN AND DONT CHANGE !!!!!!! DARJON

    Hi Jim,

No I’m not hurt nor offended, nor “very slighted” - I just said what I thought, which was I sensed some negative vibes toward the show. But as I made very clear (I think), that’s ok. I’m not hurt or anything. And I do genuinely enjoy your blog.

As for IP addresses and whatnot, that’s not us: I haven’t been here since last weekend and I unfortunately don’t have three researchers.

    All the best,

    Ray Foley

Urgh, I’m very disappointed at the literacy of those listening to the Ray Foley show. I personally love the eejit and if I didn’t have that little bit of fun for my lunchtime, I’d have to listen to some of the crap on 2FM. Don’t get me wrong, I like Rick O’Shea, but I just prefer listening to Ray’s humour. I get bored very easily with 2FM. The consistency just isn’t there.

Day in, day out, Ray is funny, refreshing and certainly a better break from the drudgery of work than anything else on the radio.

I’m forced to listen to today fm every day in work. I find it unbearable but the worst thing bout the statio is Ray Foley. He is a gobshite. He’s unfunny, irritating and cringeworthy. My immense dislike for him deepens every day. Also his stupid song bugs me no end.

Ray Darcy- Good, but needs to stop talking about & playing Arcade Fire.. same music all summer. reads to many texts from boring truck drivers..
Ray Foley- a bit annoying.. but different.
Tony Fenton- very false! but plays decent music

anyhow.. today fm plays too many ads! and theyre the same ones for the past 3 months or so. thats why i’ve changed station

Ray Foley has been sending his minions (or his various personalities) over to Boards.ie. All from the same ip, all spewing the same love-fest for Ray. Seriously man, a box of Kleenex, a mirror and a locked room and you are all set for a night with your loved one…

Jim, I really enjoy your articles in The Ticket & at the time of reading this article (months/years ago) I was astonished that he was gaining listeners too. However, I now listen every day & think he has now improved and become better than Ray D’Arcy. It may be a more purile type of humour but what he does, he does it well.

I agree with JK though, I think Adelle might not be that fond of him!

If you don’t like him, don’t feckin listen to him. Simple as that. The very fact that you are going out of your way to give out, ridicule and criticise someone you don’t like shows how big of an arse you all are.Personally, I think Foley is very good, i like how corny he can be, he speaks his mind and he’s funny.Whats wrong with that?? Go feck off and listen to some crap station, TODAY FM is the best station broadcast on out airwaves….as they say…if you have nothing nice to say….say nothing at all!!

What is the point of bothering to go out of your way to complain about someone you don’t like when the option is there for you to switch over or off. Today Fm have an excellent crew of DJ’s,and personally Foley is just getting better and better. You all must be so amazing at your job that you feel the need to go and put someone else down in an area of work i am sure most of you have no clue about…..

You people are ridiculous. I seems pretty clear that you all view yourselves as intellectuals, or at least like to portray that image, but you don’t even have the mental capacity to grasp that the Ray Foley show is NOT an educational one.. Its entertainment.
I really don’t think the Ray Foley show is produced with the prerequisite that you have to study its content in depth. You just listen to it.
And really, those of you who are on here complaining about him.. why the hell are you listening to him???
Just for your own enlightenment, on most radio’s there is a button or dial which, when turned or pressed will alter the receiving frequency of the radio thus CHANGING the channel.
    Browls.
