  • 11 things I learned this weekend

    (1) Belvedere House in Co Westmeath is a fantastic location for a festival. Maybe this is where Latitude and Bestival will be held when they come in 2008?

    (2) Gillian Welch rocks. Her performance at the Midlands Festival yesterday was quite amazing. The gig of the year so far.

    (3) After Saturday’s match, no-one will stop the Kilkenny hurlers in 2007. Galway gave their all, but Kilkenny just powered away.

    (4) Tipperary were shocking. And I’m not even going to mention Eoin Kelly’s ridiculous showboating when he came on as a sub or that stupid sideline cut which cost us the game.

    (5) Jose Gonzalez is a lovely man. His forthcoming album “In Our Nature” is gorgeous and not just that cover version of Massive Attack’s “Teardrop”.

    (6) MIA’s “Paper Planes” is the boom tune of the summer.

    (7) The patron saint of Irish blogging is also a dab hand at the aul’ music and movie reviewing.

    (8) The best way to deal with muddy car-parks and fields is big bales of straw.

    (9) The new Animal Collective album “Strawberry Jam” is as good as - if not slightly better than - Panda Bear’s “Person Pitch” album.

    (10) Thanks to the wonder of DVD, I finally get all the fuss about Life On Mars.

    (11) Hot Chip are playing the Electric Picnic. Who knew?

Belvedere is indeed a great venue. Figured that one out last year at Stradbally. In fact, it’s easily the best festival venue in the country.

and by ‘last year at stradbally’, I mean ‘last year at Hi-Fi’. Just got off a plane. Brain not working.

2 new festivals to add to our ever growing list for next year - awesome!

MIA & Animal Collective are fast becoming my albums of the year also.

1 thing I learned this weekend that I still don’t think I can comprehend… Oasis ‘Stop the Clocks’ (out since before Christmas - featuring songs that had all previously been released) sold more copies than The Thrills new album in it’s first week!

Last weekend i learnt that if you’re driving from West Cork you should send someone in another car about an hour ahead of your departure. That way they can telephone you to say that the Jack Lynch tunnel is in a jocker and that Abbeyleix is moving slowly. You can then get the map out and take evasive action. It beats AA Roadwatch anyday.

Yep, spot on Jim…I was at Belvedere over the 2 days and when the sun came out on Sunday it was truly magical, best location by a country mile. And very easy to get to, take the new road from Dublin and then the new Mullingar bypass and yr there. And yes Gillian and David Rawlings were sublime, bought her Time(The Revelator) album as a result, just gorgeous.

Are Bestival and/or Latitude coming next year? The ONLY location can only be Belvedere!
