Tune of the Week - “Thou Shalt Always Kill”

Filed under: New releases, Tune of the Week — Jim Carroll @ 10:26 pm

Dan Le Sac vs Scroobius Pip “Thou Shalt Always Kill” (Lex)

What do you mean you haven’t heard this already? Where have you been? What radio station have you been listening to?

There will always be a place in pop for the list song. Moulin Rouge director Baz Luhrmann’s ode to the joys of sunscreen, James Murphy wailing his way through the hipster laments of “Losing My Edge” or A House’s dissertation on great dead (male) artists on “Endless Art” come to mind. You can add your own likes to the list.

Now, we can now this. Scroobius Pip takes care of the rhymes, while Dan Le Sac looks after the electro stuffing which gos around these new-school tenets. For the rest of the year, expect to hear the following mantra quite a lot:

Thou shalt not put musicians and recording artists on ridiculous pedestals no matter how great they are or were.

The Beatles… were just a band.

Led Zeppelin… Just a band.

The Beach Boys… Just a band.

The Sex Pistols… Just a band.

The Clash… Just a band.

Crass… Just a band.

Minor Threat… Just a band.

The Cure… Just a band.

The Smiths… Just a band.

Nirvana… Just a band.

The Pixies… Just a band.

Oasis… Just a band.

Radiohead… Just a band.

Bloc Party… Just a band.

The Arctic Monkeys… Just a band.

The Next Big Thing.. Will be just a band.

Yeah, but most of the above are not JUST a band. If they were no one would have noticed.

Good song. Was a bit surprised when Crass and Minor Threat got a mention. I suppose they are progeneitors of punk rock, but are clearly not held in the same high regard as some of the other bands mentioned. Another great list song is the closer of Sublime’s excellent 40 Oz. To Freedom.

Daft Punk’s Teachers is another that one springs to mind.

donal - i have found to my cost that sarcasm doesnt work online! radio play is meagre due to some of the language i would imagine

sean - i was surprised too, but i reckon they were covering all bases. the lines about hip-hop’s four elements crack me up. And yes, “teachers” also covers similar bases, although in a far more complimentary manner
