  • Life after Rice

    March 29, 2007 @ 10:25 pm | by Jim Carroll

Lisa Hannigan now has no excuses. Damien Rice’s decision to end his musical relationship with her, a move expedited by whatever happened between soundcheck (which featured both of them) and show (which featured Rice on his lonesome) in Munich a fortnight ago, means Hannigan can now concentrate fully on that much talked about solo album.

Not surprisingly, her rep will have been fielding calls from record labels all week - a talent like this only comes along once in a while.

A listen to Hannigan’s version of John Martyn’s “Couldn’t Love You More”, a currently unreleased collaboration with Faultline’s David Kosten, whets the appetite for what she could do beyond the Rice fold.

Add in what she showed on her contributions to last year’s Oxfam-friendly “Cake Sale” album and there’s a potentially excellent debut in the works. All she needs now are the songs and we’re sure there are plenty of generous songwriters willing to help out.

i met her yesterday and she mentioned she was on a mission to make sweet music. very nice young lady. Mind you I don’t think I’ve ever heard her sing. I’ll make that my job for today. Best of luck with your blog thingy, I’ll link you later today. Matt

Damo and his bird need to take some happy pills and chill out. The type of angst-ridden muck they produce just doesnt cut it

Damien Rice music is coma inducing. Hannigan is the real talent.

brendan - as a matter of interest, what does “cut it” in your estimation and why?

sean - we shall see what happens here. interesting to read the reviews from his London shows last week and see that very few critics were too exercised about the absence of Lisa Hannigan. There is a market for Damien Rice just as there is also a market for hand-stitched sandals, organic porridge and Celtic FC away shirts.

Is there anywhere legitimate to get her take on ‘Couldn’t Love You More’?
I’ve heard a snippet of it and would love to get the rest of it.

adam - it has had one radio play (Nic Harcourt on KCRW’s Morning Becomes Eclectic) to date, but I reckon it will appear in the not too distant future either under the Lisa Hannigan or Faultline banner

On Sunday night, had the fortune of going to see Lisa Hannigan solo (with new band that is) in Bog Lane theatre, Ballymahon and what can I say, a collection of excellent songs which included that song from Cake sale with gorge boyf Gary Lightbody. Best of luck to all concerned, Damien Rice, Lisa H and Gary L.Excellent in their own right all the aforementioned!!
