Occupational Records
Well into the twentieth century, the vast majority of the Irish
were landless labourers or small tenant farmers. Of their nature,
such occupations have left very little in the way of records.
The poor and landless are chronicled, if at all, in the documents
of land occupation, in estate records, in church registers and
in the memories of their descendants.
For those whose ancestors had non-agricultural occupations,
however, there are very often records which can be the key to
unlocking a great deal of family information.
As well as records directly related to the occupation, it should
also be remembered that local commercial directories can often
contain valuable information.
