The Barrow Way in County Carlow brings the walking enthusiast on a 113-kilometre journey along the River Barrow. It follows the river’s towpath that once enabled the pulling of barges and boats for transport.
The path passes several small villages renowned for their hospitable locals who are happy to advise any traveller. At stages, the path winds through farmland dominated by tillage and cattle farming. The walker can expect level ground throughout.
Sights of historical and architectural interest can also be found along the way, such as bridges, lock houses, castles, abbeys and abandoned mills.
In addition, the river attracts a great deal of wildlife, including swans, mallards, herons, kingfishers and hen pheasants.
The Barrow Way can be explored in stages. Accommodation can be found every 3-19 kilometres. For the more ambitious walker, the full length of the Barrow Way, from Lowtown to St Mullins, can be completed in less than a week.
