The most visited location in the Wicklow Mountains National Park is the stunning Glendalough Valley. Visitors are drawn to this lush and quiet valley on Ireland’s east coast by its spectacular scenery and the ruins of an 6th-century monastic settlement that remain there to this day.
The lush woodlands, fast-flowing streams, rich wildlife and beautiful glass lakes of Glendalough provide a truly remarkable setting for anyone looking to get away from it all.
An extensive network of nine walking trails weaves through the three-kilometre valley and the surrounding Wicklow Mountains. Trails are marked and walking times vary from 30 minutes to four hours. There are also a number of nature trails that may interest wildlife enthusiasts and families. The Monastic City Visitor Centre provides visitors with all the necessary information regarding trails and places of interest in the area.
The Wicklow Way is a long distance walking trail that passes through the park, extending for a total of 139 kilometres. Some walkers complete the entire trail, while others choose to take it in stages. Guide books for the Wicklow Way are available to purchase at the Upper Lake Information Office. Visit the park’s website above for details.
