Horse riding is a favourite pastime in Ireland and there are numerous riding centres around the country, offering you the chance to get better acquainted with this majestic animal.
Learning to ride can be a daunting experience for some, but everybody from beginners to the experienced are catered for in most of the equestrian centres in Ireland, and once you gain some equine experience, it truly is a delight to be involved with horses.
Pony trekking, summer camps, mini competitions and rides on the beach are all a big part of learning to ride, and most of these centres also provide their own accommodation if you wish to make a full holiday out of it.
Here are some of the best equestrian centres in Ireland, all of which are regulated by AIRE (Association of Irish Riding Establishments).
Mount Juliet Equestrian
On the grounds of Kilkenny’s premier Mount Juliet Hotel, the Mount Juliet Equestrian Centre is one of the most impressive in the country. With two huge arenas, a smaller American style barn, miles upon miles of bridleways and a cross country course for experienced riders, the team here offer the best possible experience for all riders including trail riding, masterclasses and tuition. 20 minutes from Kilkenny city centre, the adjoining hotel also boasts a golf course and leisure centre, so it’s a great base for an Irish holiday.
Crossogue Equestrian Centre
A visit to the Crossogue Equestrian Centre promises to be a unique experience, with a very relaxed family attitude and a typically Tipperary wit and humour to everything. The Molloy family have been involved with horses for generations and want to share that love with you, via programmes for teenagers, adults, groups and families. Trails and cross country rides wind their way through fields full of young thoroughbreds and breeding stock. Tennis, badminton, croquet and numerous other activities are available, and you’ll get all the benefits of living near stables without any of the hard work entailed!
Pelletstown Riding Centre
Set on 100 acres in County Meath, just 15 miles from Dublin city centre and airport, Pelletstown Riding Centre is one of the longest standing establishments in Ireland. The centre is owned by the Geraghty family (famous jump jockey son Barry is a regular visitor), and is regularly visited by large birthday parties and school tours, owing to the care it takes with younger members. Facilities include an all-weather indoor arena, a showjumping course and a three mile all-weather gallop. Lessons for all ages and standards run from Tuesday to Friday in the evenings, while the centre is also open at the weekends.
Donegal Equestrian Centre
One mile from beautiful Bundoran in the north west of Ireland, Donegal Equestrian Centre is a great option for anyone thinking of holidaying in Donegal soon. Pony camps, beach and trail rides are run daily, and groups of beginners are very welcome to come and try their hand! Pony camps are run during holiday season. There are also seven day equestrian trails on offer too.
Hop Island Equestrian Centre
Nestled on an island in Cork Harbour, Hop Island Equestrian Centre offers you tranquillity in a gorgeous rural setting, and it is only a short drive from the city.
