Embrace the outdoors at Killary Adventure Company in Galway

14th November 2011

The West is awake, and Co. Galway in particular is well known for its lust for life, fast pace and love of outdoor activity. From the islands off the coast, to the heart of Connemara, to the many pubs and clubs of the city, Galway pulses with energy, and this is certainly the case too in Leenane, where Killary Adventure Co. is based.

An outdoor adventure centre that caters for adults and youths from the ages of 8 to 80, the centre has been in operation for over 30 years in Ireland, and specialises in adventure activities that range from bungee jumping to kayaking on Ireland's only fjord, and much more in between. Perfect for school tours, stag and hen parties and everything else in between, here you can let loose and enjoy ireland’s breathtaking scenery, while hanging off a bungee platform or climbing up a mountain of course!

The climbing area is one of the main attractions of the centre. Opened in 2007, the Sky Frame boasts Ireland’s only fixed bungee jump, the Giant Swing and a huge new Climbing Tower. Not for the faint hearted, you’ll get the chance to climb the tower and jump from it. You will never forget the feeling of freefalling, safe in the knowledge there will be no bumpy landing.

The Adventure Co. is situated on Killary Harbour, Ireland's only fjord, and mid way between Connemara and Westport, Co. Mayo, so watersport is a big part of any trip here. Take a kayak out onto the lake, through beautiful scenery and vast, rolling hills. Just a 10 minute paddle will bring you to seal island where a family of seals will tolerate you quietly paddling amongst them while they bask in the sunshine. Sailing dinghies, racing yachts and windsurf boards are all available too, and you’ll be guided by experts in seafaring, like Jamie Young, an ISA Yacht Master with many sailing expeditions to his credit, including single-handed transatlantic races.

There are two rock climbing sites in the centre, and you’ll get to scale them both from top to bottom. If you’re sure you’ve a head for heights, then try out the zip wire area, the high ropes course, or the building blocks. Oh, and if that’s not enough, challenge your group to a game of “lasercombat”, described as paintball without the pain.

Rates are around €46 per adult per 3 hour session, and you can book everything beforehand on their site. Accommodation is available on site form €70 in the high season, and group rates are available. Galway stag parties are welcome too, and you can see here for all the info.
