What is News Digest?

The News Digest is an email containing summaries of the top stories from The Irish Times, delivered to your email address 6 mornings a week. The top stories are free to view and subscription is required to retrieve the full text of Premium Content articles.

I'm seeing a text-only version, how do I see the HTML version with images?

Some email clients are not compatible with the format we use in our News Digest and display the text-only version instead of the HTML version (which includes images). For example people using Outlook 97 or Outlook 98 will see the text-only version, with some HTML and image attachments by default. People using Eudora 5.x will only see the text-only version. However all three of these email clients are capable of viewing the HTML version. So if you know that your email client supports HTML emails then either email lists@irish-times.com with a subject line of 'set news.digest html' or use the following email URL: lists@irish-times.com?subject=set news.digest html

I've subscribed and received the welcome email but I have not received the News Digest.

The News Digest is sent before 6.00am (GMT) every morning excluding Sundays. If you do not receive the News Digest then you should check with your organisation's IT staff or email provider to ensure that the News Digest hasn't been blocked or incorrectly flagged as junk mail, and not delivered to your email account. For example if you are using Hotmail and set your Junk Mail Filter to anything higher than default then you may not receive our News Digest email. However, in the case of Hotmail (and some other email systems which have anti-spam features) you may add our News Digest email address (news.digest@irish-times.com) to your list of known Mailing lists to ensure daily delivery of the News Digest.

I don't like HTML emails, how can I get a text-only version?

You can receive text-only versions of the News Digest by either emailing lists@irish-times.com with a subject line of 'set news.digest txt' or by using the following email URL: lists@irish-times.com?subject=set news.digest txt

How do I subscribe to News Digest?

To subscribe to News Digest please go to www.ireland.com/newsdigest/ and enter your details.

What if I'm on holidays and don't want to receive the digest?

You can tell us to stop sending the digest to you by either emailing lists@irish-times.com with a subject line of 'set news.digest nomail' or by using the following email URL: lists@irish-times.com?subject=set news.digest nomail

Then when you come back from holidays you can switch on receipt of the News Digest again by either emailing lists@irish-times.com with a subject line of 'set news.digest mail' or by using the following email URL: lists@irish-times.com?subject=set news.digest mail

Why should I choose ireland.com as my email provider?

With ireland.com's Premium Email service, you get a completely unique email address - yourname@ireland.com. This is a premium web-based mail service, which features a host of benefits. Your account gives you 40mb of email space and further space for storage in the File Cabinet feature. There is built-in anti-spam filtering and an automatic anti-virus tool, and with our zero-tolerance for spam policy, your account should receive a very low level of spam email. Other features include a calendar and an address book, which is fully import- and export-capable. If desired, you may avail of POP3 or IMAP access to read your email and SMTP to send your email on an external mail client such as Outlook, or use the auto-forward feature to send email to an alternative address. And, of course, you will receive friendly and efficient Customer Service response via email.

How do I choose an email address?

Please Subscribe to register for your ireland.com account. The field 'username' refers to the prefix of your email address (the suffix will always be '@ireland.com'). If your choice is not available, the system will suggest some alternatives.

Will I be reminded when my subscription is due to expire?

Yes. You will receive reminder emails and reminder messages on logging into your account from 30 days prior to the expiry of your subscription.

How do I renew my subscription?

Log into My Account, click on the 'Renew' button and follow the renewal process.

How do I attach a document?

To attach a document to your email:

  • In the Compose section of your mailbox click the "Attach" button to open the attachment window.
  • Click the "Browse" button and locate the file you wish to attach, then click "Open".
  • Click the "Attach" button and once the file appears in the box under Step 2, click "Done".

When you send your e-mail, the attachment will be sent along with your message.

How do I save my sent emails?

Select "Options", then "Preferences", look for the option to "Save copy of outgoing mail in sent folder", tick the Yes option, and click on "Update".

How do I change the name that appears on the emails I send?

You can change the name that appears on outgoing e-mails, by changing the "First Name" and "Surname" in the section under "Profile Information" in 'Options'.

How do I change my password?

You can change your password for your account by clicking Change Password in the My Account section of the site.

How do I minimise the amount of spam in my account?

There are several things you can do to reduce unwanted spam:

  • Increase the filter sensitivity level of ireland.com's Junk Mail Filter on your account. The Junk Mail Filter is an email protection service that prevents unsolicited commercial email (spam), or messages containing malicious codes (viruses), from reaching your mailbox. It provides a range of options that allow you to set the degree of tolerance the system uses for filtering your email. It also has features that ensure that legitimate messages reach your mailbox instead of being accidentally blocked (a.k.a Safe Lists). Please consult the 'Help' menu on the left hand-side navigation bar in your ireland.com inbox for more information.
  • You can help us to improve our spam protection system by reporting messages as spam using the 'This is Spam' button. This will send a copy of the message to the Abuse Team and will delete the message from your mailbox. If you use an external email client, such as Outlook, then please forward the email to abuse@ireland.com and remember to include the full headers.
  • Make sure you know what you are agreeing to when filling in online forms (e.g payments, questionnaires, competitions etc). If you 'publish' your email address on any site that does not guarantee your privacy, the address may find its way on to any sort of marketing list, including those of offensive spammers.
  • Be careful about posting your email address in messages to online forums or newsgroups. Again, even with controlled access to a supposedly secure online environment, any forum where others can view your address makes it vulnerable as a potential spam target.
  • Never respond to offers to be removed from mailing lists that you have not signed up for. Your response will only serve to confirm to the spammer that you have a legitimate email address which they can 'hit' with spam.

If you require more information on spam, or would like to review our email provider's anti-spam policy, please visit http://www.outblaze.com/antispam Relevant article: Why Am I Getting All This Spam?

How do I forward an email including full headers using Outlook/Outlook Express?

  • If you are using Outlook open the email message in question and go to View, then Options. Select all of the text in the 'Internet Headers' area and copy the text.
  • If you are using Outlook Express open the email message in question and go to File, Properties, Details and 'Message Source'. Select all of the text in the 'Message Source' area and copy the text.

Paste the text into a new message and send it as you would normally.

What does the Junk Mail Filter consist of?

ireland.com's Junk Mail Filter is an email protection service that prevents unsolicited commercial email (spam), or messages containing malicious code (viruses), from reaching your mailbox. It provides a range of options that allow you to set the degree of tolerance your systems uses for filtering email. It also has features that ensure that legitimate messages reach your mailbox instead of being accidentally blocked.

The Junk Mail Filter can be found by clicking on the link on the left hand-side navigation bar in your ireland.com email account. The filter sensitivity level allows you to set the sensitivity level when filtering incoming emails. The sensitivity of the system varies from off, to low (default), to high, to strictly accepting only messages from email addresses specified in your Safe Lists. The Block List is a list of email addresses or domain names from which you don't wish to receive email.

You can set how often you want your junk mail to be automatically deleted by clicking on the Junk Mail Deletion link on the the anti-spam page.

The anti-spam filter is a folder where messages designated as junk mail are sent. This allows you to go through your list of filtered messages to check if valid messages have been mistaken for spam and quarantined. Using the various message handling options, you may choose what you want to do with the filtered message(s).

The Notes is a folder where announcements about the Junk Mail Filter are stored. Other announcements regarding your anti-virus and anti-spam services will be delivered to this folder. Please consult the 'Help' menu on the left hand-side navigation bar in your ireland.com inbox for more information.

Can I sort my mail in a different way?

You can sort your mail by sender, subject, date or size. Simply click on one of these headings and your mail will re-sort accordingly. Click twice to sort the mail in the opposite direction (e.g starting from earliest date, or latest date).

Why did I not receive a read receipt?

Some mail clients do not recognise read receipts. Also, depending on the mail client, message recipients can choose not to send read receipts, even when they are requested.

What is POP3 or IMAP access?

An account with POP3 or IMAP access allows you to access mail through an external e-mail client such as Outlook, Eudora, or Netscape Mail. In simpler terms you can download and read ireland.com e-mails via Outlook Express or other similar e-mail software packages.

You can use either mechanism to read your e-mail but one mechanism (POP3) downloads your e-mails to your PC, whilst the other (IMAP) leaves your email on the ireland.com server and makes a copy to your email client. You should only use one of these two mechanisms to access your emails.

How do I set up POP3 or IMAP access?

Please configure your email account settings as follows for POP3 or IMAP access.

If you are using IMAP then the settings are...

  • Incoming IMAP server: imap.ireland.com
  • Outgoing SMTP server: smtpx.ireland.com

And if you are using POP3 then please use...

  • Incoming POP3 server: pop3.ireland.com
  • Outgoing SMTP server: smtpx.ireland.com
  • Account name: username@ireland.com
  • Email address: username@ireland.com

What is SMTP access?

SMTP allows you to send email through an external email client such as Outlook.

How do I set up SMTP to send emails?

In your email client configuration settings under the 'Outgoing Mail Server' settings ensure that 'My server requires authentication' is selected. Then select 'Logon Using' and insert the account/user name: 'username@ireland.com'.

How can I archive my messages from my ireland.com account?

You can download and save all your email messages to another location by using either POP3 or IMAP connectivity

Are there any space limits on sending or receiving emails?

Yes. Your overall space for storing received emails, including all folders in your account, is limited to 40mb. Futhermore each email, whether it is being sent or received, can be no more than 4mb in size.

What is the Desktop Email Alert?

The Desktop Email Alert is an icon, which, once activated, sits on the bottom right corner of your screen in the taskbar system tray. It informs you of the arrival of new messages into your mailbox even if you are not logged on to your ireland.com email account. Double-clicking on the icon will launch a Web browser and take you to the login page where you can log in to check your mail. Please note you must be connected to the Internet in order for the desktop email alert to function.

How do I activate the Desktop Email Alert?

Simply click on the "Desktop Email" link on your email account login page. The download involves a few easy steps, just click OK and agree to the conditions as set out in the Licence Agreement and the feature will be downloaded in a few moments.

How does the Desktop Email Alert let me know when I have new messages?

The Desktop Email Alert either flashes a white envelope in your system tray, or a window pops up to let you know that you have new mail. You can choose how you would like to be notified by setting your preferences. To do so, right-click the Desktop Email Alert icon and select "Preferences...", then either check or uncheck the "Display pop-up window when new mail arrives" checkbox. The white envelope will stop flashing after you have read your mail.

I am experiencing problems logging in to my email. Why?

The password is case sensitive. Ensure that you are typing the correct combination of capitals and lower case characters.

I am seeing the error message 'Login Session Expired'. Why?

There are a number of possible reasons, the following being the most likely:

  • This issue may be caused by our account security system. If the time or date set in your computer is "later" than your local time, the system believes that you have been logged in for an excessive period and automatically logs you out. This security feature is designed to ensure that an unattended account does not remain indefinitely active, potentially allowing unauthorised access to the account. Please check the time and date settings on your computer and correct them if necessary.
  • Possibly your Internet browser is not accepting session cookies. Please refer to our document to enable cookies. This page includes instructions on how to enable cookies for a number of popular browsers and versions.
  • Your browser may be storing an old version of the email page. This is called 'caching'. To 'Empty Cache', go to 'Tools' and select 'Internet Options'. Under 'Temporary Internet Files', click the 'Settings' button. In the 'Setting' dialog box, click on 'View Files', then delete all files from the 'Temporary Internet Files'. For an immediate complete refresh of your screen, hold down the Control key and press F5.
  • It may be due to a saved password. To 'Clear Saved Passwords', go to the 'Tools' menu, select 'Internet Options', then 'Content', then 'AutoComplete' and click 'Clear Passwords'. (Note: this will clear all saved passwords, not just your ireland.com password).

If any of your queries have not been answered above, or you would like additional information on any points, please contact: emailsupport@ireland.com

How do I find the information I require in the digital archive?

There are three ways to find articles in the digital archive:

  • Search: Type one or more search terms (the words or phrase that best describe the article you want to find) into the search box, select other search parameters (e.g. date range) , and click Search.
  • Browse: You can browse the archive by date by clicking on Browse in the top navigation bar in the archive.
  • Timeline: A Historical Timeline of significant events in history is accessible from the top navigation bar of the archive.
Please note that the digital archive is designed for broadband usage and may not function properly if you are using a modem. We suggest a connection speed of at least 512 kbit/s

How do I use the search?

Type one or more search terms (the words or phrase that best describe the publication you want to find) into the search box, select other search parameters (e.g. date range), and click Search. The digital archive is not case sensitive.

Start with the basic search term that you are looking for. If you are looking for general information on the moon, try the word moon first. It is advisable to use specific search terms to refine your query; if you require specific information on the moon landing, enter the search moon landing.  To restrict a search further, include more terms, e.g. Apollo 11 moon landing.

The digital archive has been created from original copies of the newspaper, and you may find the age of the newspaper and quality of the originals may affect the searchability and results.

By default, the archive returns pages that include all of your search terms. There is no need to include "and" between terms.

Below is an overview of features that may assist you in your search:

  • Phrase Searching: The use of quotation marks ( " ) finds documents containing the exact phrase entered in quotation marks. To specify something as a phrase, enclose it in double quotes (for example "George Bernard Shaw").
  • Search Weighting: If you wish, you can give a higher weighting to more important words by placing a plus (+) sign in front of them. Similarly, less desired terms are preceded by a minus (-) sign; you can use the minus sign to remove all or most items containing a specific word. For example, to search for documents about manchester united but not about champions you would specify the following search string: +manchester +united -champions.
  • Sorting Options: You can choose how you would like the results of your query to be displayed; by the closest match, newest or oldest articles.
  • Refine Options: Your search results can be refined by newspaper/website section, date or by inserting additional words into the relevant field(s). You can also choose to exclude a section from the results. These options are available on the right hand side of the page.

Why can't I find information on a person in historical articles?

The terms that are used in the modern day may differ from the terms that were used at the time that an article in the past was published. Historically there was a tendency to describe people more formally or by their formal title, e.g. Mr Yeats instead of W.B. Yeats, or President Kennedy rather than John F. Kennedy.
If the surname you are searching for is common try searching various versions of a name or try to searching for the full name in quotes, which will find documents containing the exact phrase entered in quotation marks, e.g. "John Murphy". If the surname is unusual, try to search by the surname alone.

Why can't I find an event in historical articles?

The names by which some events are commonly known may be different to when they were first reported. For example, the First World War has been referred to the Great War, or the 1916 Rising has been reported as the Rebellion. Try to search using words that describe the event or that may have been used in reports. It may be useful to check other historical sources.
Please note that some spellings have also changed over time.
Examples:

  • Barbadoes, now Barbados
  • Buenos Ayres, now Buenos Aires
  • Chili, now Chile
  • Hooping cough, now whooping cough

I can't find the event on the date it happened.

Before the days of the telegraph and telephone, events were reported days or weeks after they took place because of the time taken for news to reach the newspaper.

I cannot locate a birth, marriage, or death notice in historical articles.

In historical birth and death notices women were called by their husband's name e.g. Mrs John Murphy or Mrs Murphy. Children might not have been named in some birth notices, e.g. 'To Mrs Murphy a son'. The notice may have been published in a newspaper other than The Irish Times.
